Thanks to all who responded to my query. As my main interest was in saving the monitor I accepted the suggestion of setting the "BlankTime" in XF86Config. I hadn't even thought of that one. So no need for a screensaver at all.
I have yet to decide whether the life of the monitor is affected by cycling it into the standby mode. Tim
