There are GNU/Linux installations based on the usmsdos filesystem.  I've
done this with SuSE.  I don't recommend it for performance, security,
and data integrity reasons.

Suggestion:  Buy a new disk and install GNU/Linux on that.  2GB will be
sufficient, 10GB rather more than, and either should be quite
inexpensive.
