Hedrick could never actually run his patch on a VIA system, because he has none. He wrote it reading the docs only... So now another person volunteered to mantain that driver (Vojtech Pavlick). Unfortunately, it seems taht his driver will only run on 2.4 kernels (I'm using 2.4.0-test10-pre3). And the old VIA driver (from Hedrick) has a few problems, including the fact that it didn't always recognize the chipset properly (happened with me). Not sure what you should do, though... It seems taht you didn't enable all you needed in the kernel to use UDMA. Maybe you'd like to try that first?
