It's not compiled into the kernel. I'm not sure what the variables are called, but in menuconfig, you must enable (in Console Drivers): VGA textmode (even though you'll be using framebuffer) Video Mode slection support Support for framebuffer devices * Either generic VESA fb, or one specific to your card Advanced Low level drivers (well, I guess the low level drivers get selected automatically. For kgicon, you must include them all.
