I don't the answer to your question, but if you don't get one you might just
go ahead and reinstall grub to be sure it is there.  I don't know the
command for that, but 'apropros grub' should lead you to the manpage that
would help.  I vaguely remember something called 'grub-install' or similar. 
I don't have it on this machine; so I can't check.
