This is an unfair characterization. The criticism isn't that the Debian installer doesn't have graphics. The criticism is that the choices are both obscure and remarkably confusing in spots. *I* don't have trouble with it either -- I've been using Debian for several years and Linux for longer. A first-time installer will be (I say with complete confidence) mystified. Now, is the first-time Linux user Debian's target? Apparently not, and that's okay.
