Something that will make the "smoothness" increase dramatically, is if
you use squid and iptables to build a transparent proxy.  Bonus points
if you use adzapper with it, since this will save bandwidth wasted by
downloading ad banners, flash ads, etc.  You can increase availability
on, say, slashdotted or otherwise temporarily overloaded sites when
you have it work as a peer with ircache.net.  See the squid and
adzapper docs on how to set it up, and ircache.net's FAQ at thier
website to peer it.
