Try this:

Use gpm with settings fups2 and repeat_type=raw.
In your X-config set
Option "Device" "/dev/gpmdata"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
or
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"

I got an strange old (f.. up) Logitech mouse running on my system, but - may be - without the wheel.

PS/2 works, but as you say, without the wheel. I reckon it'll have to do for now. Thanks!
