I *think* that the Frame Buffer drivers have been used on more architectures than that. But now they've been ported to x86 as well. They work on a lot of modern cards. You lose the card-specific extensions but you do gain a much simplified X set-up and one that you don't need to change with your card (just install the appropriate Frame-buffer driver).
