Chris, I think I know what is going on. First, try starting with Chapter 2 of the DVD.
I rented "Royal Tannenbaums" and the sound would only start if I started on Chapter 2. Someone who sounded knowledgeable said that commercial DVD authors have lots of optimization tricks, and srarting the soundtrack after the beginning of the DVD was one of them. It was also VERY quiet at that time.
