Yes, NFS is RPC-based. So is NIS. If you're running either of these, you'll need to keep the portmapper around. If not, there's a good chance you'll be OK without it. The only way to tell for sure, of course, is to turn it off and see if anything breaks. `/etc/init.d/portmap stop` will shut it down until you reboot (or change runlevels) for basic testing.
