if dpkg replaces a file, it writes the old one to foo.dpkg-old. So your X config should still be there, just renamed. Although I have never seen an X config changed by Debian. as for your devices, perhaps your kernel was changed somehow? Also notes that the place to setup IP addresses has changed -- you now edit /etc/network/interfaces.
