login prompt is part of the authentication. i have yet to see any kind of dialup that doesn't have a login prompt(be it dialup serial lines or terminal servers). using the 'login' option will tell pppd to authenticate using /etc/passwd. using that line i pasted in the email, provided you are using a debian package of mgetty, if the remote system is using PPP, the server will autodetect that and load them directly into PPP "mode" if ppp is not detected on the remote end they will get a shell.
