there is a bug in the /etc/init.d/autofs script that prepends a "/etc" to all nis maps. Maybe you are hitting that bug? You can just delete that line in /etc/init.d/autofs or use one of that various patches in http://www.debian.org/Bugs/db/pa/lautofs.html . Regards, Thomas
