Why do you want to use it?

Because I'm setting this machine up for someone else who has already decided to use KDE and that "Internet Dialer" (KPPP) is the way to get dialed up, and admittedly, it's a fairly nice GUI tool for dialing up.

I gave in and modified /etc/ppp/options as you suggested; it works; I'll live with it.
