This is a good point to keep in mind. YOu don't need to run *either* GNOME *or* KDE. You can mix things. They're both pretty good in terms of functionality and performance, from my experience. So if you like the looks of GNOME then use the GNOME apps, and if you find something missing from it, see if there's a KDE version. I believe there are still issues concerning *compatibility* between the Qt license and the GPL (in terms of linking GPL code to Qt libraries) or something like that. But I don't have a reference.
