I upgraded WINE a week or two ago and then I started getting this same type of message. I tinkered and fought and finally gave up. Then a couple of days ago I pointed my sources.list to woody and updated again. That problem went away. My favorite app ("Backgammon, by George") crashes a lot now, when it was pretty stable two WINE versions ago, but at least I can usually get in one and a half games before it just winks out of existence. Sorry this isn't a real solution for you, but it might help somehow.
