I have successfully used Partition Magic to alter the size of partitions which already have assigned mount points (I installed from an MS-DOS partition and then deleted the partition and made it part of root). It made the system scan the whole thing next time I booted up, but nothing bad happened. Try it on a partition which doesn't really matte first, though, just to be safe. :)
