No idea but I had a vaguely similar thing a few months ago trying to use a SCSI zip drive via the external connector on the scsi card. I could write a certain amount of data, say 20 MB, and then I'd get this message. This was kernel 2.2.1. At about the same time my filesystems (I have two drives on that same scsi controller) would get corrupted and I lost a whole bunch of files. Interesting because the whole point of the exercise was to backup my filesystems, sigh. Even more interesting because the drive worked like a greased charm in dos98. (Or maybe dos98 just didn't notice that its filesystem was having holes shot in it by a defective scsi controller, but I don't really know what I'm talking about here.) This led to my current theory that it's a good thing software and hardware are separate, because at any moment you can usually trust one and not the other.
