I've had a number of problems with the SVGA driver on my own ViRGE/VX card, documented in the nether depths of comp.os.linux.*. Followups from others indicated that even with identically specified cards, some worked with the SVGA driver, some required the S3 driver. Go figure. -- Karsten M.
