Many thanks to those who emailed me help. In the end (after perusing the list archives), I figured out that there's many more parameters that can follow 'rescue' when booting from the CDROM. In particular, I found that
rescue root=/dev/hda1 single was enough to get root access back. From there, it was easy. Once again, thanks. Frank.
