If your sources.list says something Olaf> like: Olaf> deb file:/pub/debian unstable main deb Olaf> http://ftp.debian.org/debian unstable main It is not this simple; in fact, I think there's an out-and-out bug. I'll report it when I have some time to waste. The problem is that "apt-get update" and "apt-get install" (also upgrade, etc.) make mutually inconsistent assumptions about the structure of the mirror directory. Suppose the entry in sources.list reads deb file:/usr/local/src/debs localdebs main non-free Then "apt-get update" looks for /usr/local/src/debs/dists/localdebs/{main,non-free}/binary-i386/Packages but "apt-get install pysol" looks for /usr/local/src/debs/main/binary-i386/games/pysol_*.deb. I was only able to work around this by setting up the mirror as follows. /usr/local/src/debs---main ^ | | --non-free | | | --dists---localdebs-- | | ------------------------- This is related to the thread earlier this week about the semantics of a trailing slash on the deb URL.
