I cut my teeth on the Llama book (or alpaca, or whatever the heck that is) (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/lperl3/). I already knew C/C++ though. If he doesn't need to program, though, he'd probably be better served by reading something like the "owl" book http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/lunix5/. There's another one with a funky little monkey-rodent on the cover which is a great reference. But the owl will take him through learning things like sed, grep, tar, and the like.
