With potato the dist-upgrade will do the same as the normal upgrade,if you upgrade to woody, after that you don't upgrade for a while, you might have to do a dist-upgrade to really upgrade the system.
I like to think: don't expect a upgrade to go smoothly, just be happy if it does...
