I do actually have fast machines at either end and the slow (dialup) link. That was why I was hoping to use a high compression. Unfortunately I dont have permissions on the remote machine for dxpc to bind to a socket.
Oh well, if only it was a text based application, and java didn't want to fill up the link with 32bbp resolution to display six or seven different colours. Thanks again, Mark.
