Is it possible that you have your CD-ROM connected to the first IDE channel (hence on the same as your harddisk)? I would put the CD-ROM on its one on the second channel. I don't think that this would cause your computer to crash but you can try it anyway. Maybe there is something wrong with your IDE controller?
