You shouldn't need to.
If you have php3 (not php3-cgi) installed:
- Install php3-mysql;
- Ensure that the line
extension=mysql.so
appears in /etc/php3/apache/php3.ini
- Stop & re-start apache.
If you're using php3-cgi:
- Install php3-cgi-mysql;
- Ensure that the line
extension=mysql.so
appears in /etc/php3/cgi/php3.ini
