I get the same message in Slink but X runs fine; I expect it's
just a sign that you're using a FIFO instead of a device, so
some ioctls that X expects aren't available.

On my setup, I use just "-R" rather than "-Rmsc"; have you tried that?

For me, it also works if I use /dev/psaux after disabling gpm;
as a last resort you could try that, but it's possible that your
true problem lies elsewhere.
