Better yet, turn it off in /etc/syslog.conf like so:
*.=info;*.=notice;*.=warn;\
auth,authpriv.none;\
cron,daemon.none;\
mail,mark.none,news.none -/var/log/messages
^^^^^^^^^
Add `mark.none' to line defs for files in which you don't want
the mark.
