I assume you installed from a CD? There is an obscure date-related bug in the TeTeX distribution, which means that initex cannot run to produce the necessary *.fmt files at installation time. This has the curious effect that installations done from a CD before a certain date work well, while installations done from the same CD at a later date don't work at all. If you install instead from a debian FTP archive (stable or frozen), your problem should go away, Jim
