Why are you compiling X?????????????????????????????????????? Do you know debian packages????? To my experience they work a lot easier then compiling yourself.... Just download the .deb packages you need (or use apt, you want the newest x but perhaps you don't want to upgrade your whole system to potato or woody, in that case you should download) and install them using dpkg...
