not to point out the obvious or anything but have you made sure that you're actually loging stuff to /dev/console? check your /etc/syslog.conf file for a line like this: daemon.*;mail.*;\ news.crit;news.err;news.notice;\ *.=debug;*.=info;\ *.=notice;*.=warn |/dev/console adam.
