For PCI specifically?  /sbin/lspci should get you a listing of
everything you have installed; there are a couple of packages that
claim to do autoconfiguration of one sort or another but I've never
tried any of them.

I guess I'm thinking of an auto-config tool.
Take lspci -vv and do something with it.
