I just installed a Microtek X6EL, then xsane, sane, and gimp. That's all I had to do and this scanner was running.
Oh, there were a couple of rough spots. First I had to recompile the kernel with scsi generic support. THen I had to run MAKEDEV in /dev to get /dev/sgX. (Why weren't they there?) Then I ran scanimage --list-devices After that, the device has been identified and detected. Almost magical, if you ask me.
