You don't need it if you're serving TT fonts with xfstt (I don't know
about xfs-tt). Just put your TT fonts in /usr/share/fonts/truetype and
restart xfs. Note: Not a good idea to restart while XDM or X (you'll
want to stop and restart them as well -- or you may have problems).

"mkfontdir" is in xbase-clients.

Also (depending on the FONT Howto you're refering to), don't follow the
directions about creating the Fontmap file for ghostscript. It'll screw
up your /etc/gs.Fontmap file and then you won't be able to use
ghostscript/ghostview (gv). Instead, use the '-nogs' option to type1inst
so that the "Fontmap" isn't modified, but the fonts.dir fonts.scale are
created.
