NO MOUSE

I have recently purchased the book Learning Debian GNU/linux from O'reilly pub.I installed the system without any problems and got it up and running flawlessly but when I tried to install X my mouse would not respond.I've tried everything I could but nothing seems to work.Before installing Debian I was using Mandrake Linux and my mouse worked fine.What do I need to do to get my mouse working.My system is a Compaq 5304 with what I believe to be a 2-button ps/2 mouse by logitech.Any info at all would be extremely helpful.                                                                    thank you and looking forward to the Hurd
