Wilson: I have a SCSI tape too. The device names are /dev/st0 (rewinds after each operation) and /dev/nst0 (does NOT rewind after each operation - you or your program/script must do the rewind).
You can use 'mt -f /dev/[n]st0 OPERATION' to manipulate a tape (do man mt for a description of the OPERATIONS that are available). For backups, use 'tar' or (I prefer) 'dump and restore'.
