I've also heard about those problems. I can't remember the details off-hand, but they can be found on the BUGTRAQ mailing list (www.securityfocus.com has an archive).
I've done a bit of searching myself for the "ultimate ip logger" and I really prefer iplog. http://ojnk.sourceforge.net/ It has options to run as a non-root user which is very nice. Maybe ippl does too, last time I checked them both out (a couple weeks ago) iplog was much cooler in terms of features. (I needed libc5 on my machine to compile it btw.)
