For those following my ongoing saga... I have gone with "wimp out" solution. I have gone and physically switched my Win98 and Linux drives. Thus, Win98 becomes hda, and the BIOS boots its MBR first. What I am now using is PowerQuest's BootMagic to default to the Linux partition instead of LILO. This seems to work quite adequately.
Since I was unable to boot my Linux partition afterward, I'm pretty
sure something was looking for hda1, I went and installed slink r4.
