When I tried using the simultaneous install
everything went the same as
doing each app. Doing "dpkg -i --force-overwrite
gmc*.deb" did overwrite
the offending file, but then it errored out saying
that gmc depended on
"perl5" and that "perl5" was not installed. What is
that all about. It
is a stable slink system with perl5.00404 installed
in /usr/bin with
symlinks in /usr/local/bin to "perl"
Reviewing my steps while logged in as root:
1. created directory /temp
2. downloaded files from potato with wxftp:
mc_4.5.42-4.dsc
mc_4.5.42-4.diff.gz
mc_4.5.42.orig.tar.gz
3. changed ownership of downloads to root
4. ran command: "dpkg-source -x -su mc*dsc"
5. that created 2 new directories; /mc-4.5.42
/mc-4.5.42.orig
6. ran "cd /mc-4.5.42"
7. ran "debian/rules binary"
8. that created the files;
mc-common_4.5.42-4_i386.deb
mc_4.5.42-4_i386.deb
gmc_4.5.42-4_i386.deb
9. tried installing each package separately, as a
group and using
--force-overwrite: you have the results of that.
10. mc works and the original mouse problem is
solved, but gmc will not
install because of "perl5" missing dependency.
Yes I am a perfectionist and I want to get this
right so your advice is
greatly appreciated.
