How do I install additional modules?

Hello

 I was wondering on how can I install additional modules to my linux 
system. (serial-to make my modem work?) and also audio(for sound to work?) 
and also How do I set my XNLSPATH environment variable to 
"usr/X11r6/lib/X11/NLS" in order for some motif applications to work.
