The CD would really be nice to have, but you still don't need it. After the upgrade, you will still be stuck with Perl 5.004, and unable to install a number of packages including the previously mentioned debconf. The way I had to go was download all the perl 5.005 stuff in the interpreters and base directories from the unstable distro manually and get dselect to install them. Once it finally was convinced (I've avoided dselect like plague so far), I did another apt update and dist-upgrade which will install the Perl 5.005 dependent stuff.
