The `cat /dev/sndstat' stuff appears to be something of a red herring here (with this hardware atleast). Just launch freeamp and play something. Does anyone here know why this is? The Sound-HOWTO seems out of date, and the kernel documentation is less than clear, so I sympathize with your frustration. Best wishes, cbb
