Err, I don't think any installer existed in the beginning of Debian. And, it took at least a few years before installers for any distro began to get fancy. These days, I think the installer is minimalistic because it has to be ported to so many arches (11 for woody). It's significantly more difficult to write a fancy installer that also works on all the arches Debian supports. -- My secret to happiness... is that I have a heart of a 12-year-old boy.
