not really a answer to your overall problem but i would suggest making your .xsession conditional based on which machine you are logged into, this can be done various ways either by checking hostnames or the machine type in the variable MACHTYPE.
for example i have made my .bash_profile have a conditional path and library path on one of my accounts, this way software i have installed into my own userspace will only be in my path when on the compatible machine (a OSF/4 system) and a different path when i am on a GNU/Linux on alpha and ya on a i386. you should be able to do something similer for your .xsession.
Has anyone else ecnountered this problem?
no
Are there any other means of specifying the default or preferred window manager, on a per-host (rather than per-user) basis?
in slink its supposed to be /etc/X11/window-managers in potato i think they want to move to alternatives (which i still have not really figured out :)
