That is the easy way. Just save /usr/local (Debian shouldn't touch it anyway). Unfortunately, /usr/lib gets filled up with loads of rubbish over time, but say goodbye to it anyway. Lots of it is outdated libc5 stuff. After a few weeks with Debian packages, most things will be back in order again. Personally, I created a /usr/local-libc5 directory to put all the old /usr/local stuff in. This way, I can migrate to newer glibc versions as I upgrade, or delete the old stuff in favour of newer Debian packages.
