I believe that is one of the goals of the X frame buffer driver,
reading/writing directly to the frame buffer, in many cases really slow
but at least it is very compadible (from what I have read, I don't know
the technical details)  Don't know the status on it yet, and i think it
depends on frame buffer code in the kernel that is still beta (?)
