I think you're on the wrong track here. If you look at Gerard MacNeil's posting which seemed to follow the Ethernet-HOWTO (which should be in your /usr/doc) you may have more success. You only need one module which is aliased to eth0, eth1 etc. The HOWTO example fortuitously happens to be for NE2000 cards.
