Assuming you're using slink, then you probably want 2.0.36 for a quiet life. Don't use 2.1.x as they're development kernels. You could move to 2.2.13 when you're happy with things. The docs are included in the source, so you don't need the -doc package. But you want the kernel-package to make it much easier to compile kernals and make them into debian packages.
