Not hard at all. Just add an entry to /etc/apt/sources.list that points at a slink deb for the latest X, then apt-get update, apt-get install <the various X packages>. Only requirement is that you have Internet connection. Even that's not a strict requirement if you can get the debs onto your machine another way (zip disk, cd, etc).
